The world prison population is steadily increasing: in 2008 were 9.8 million prisoners in 2002 were 8.75 million and in the last 10 years the prisoners have increased by about 2 million units. The United States has the highest rate of carcerizzazione the world, 756 to 100 thousand of the national population, followed by Russia (630), Rwanda (604), Cuba (531), Belarus (468) and Georgia (421 ). Nearly three fifths of countries (59%) had rates carcerizzazione less than 150 per 100 thousand. The average global carcerizzazione is 168 per 100 thousand.
